At Westgate Hill Primary we understand how important learning to read and a love of reading is.
The teaching of reading begins in the Nursery, when children begin to recognise sounds around them, hear stories and join in with rhymes.
From Nursery children are introduced to sounds, through the Jolly Phonics programme, which helps children to remember sounds, by using pictures and actions. Children then move on to the “Letters and Sounds” phonics programme.
Pupils are heard to read as individuals and also in small groups. it is also important that they begin to love books, which we encourage with our lass stories.
Throughout school children need to bring their reading folders to school each day, and change their books regularly.
We value the support you give to your child’s learning and hearing him/her read is an excellent way to do this.
